VAST and now VST (Virtual Maintenance Trainers)
In March 2005, Catalyst Interactive signed a contract with Australian Aerospace to jointly provide a state-of-the-art Virtual Avionics Systems Trainer (VAST) to Australian Defence Force's Tiger ARH (Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter).
VAST's extensive simulation and three-dimensional (3D) techniques allow avionics technicians to train comprehensively on the ground and substantially increases the flexibility in training delivery methods. It lessens reliance on physical training aids, including actual helicopters. Maintainers can now train locally and remotely using standard local area networks, and standalone PCs and laptops, This significantly enhances training safety and cost effectiveness.
VAST's technology is based on Catalyst Interactive's learning content and management platform, LearnSwitch® Enterprise (LSE), and a Virtual Training Device (VTD) as the workflow engine. The integration of 3D virtual technology into online learning provides an unrivalled, immersive, and life-like experience.
Following VAST's success, Catalyst Interactive signed a contract in 2006 with AA to produce a world-first Virtual System Trainer (VST) for the Army's new multi-role helicopter, MRH 90.
The three-year, multi-million dollar training partnership will cover all MRH-90 systems including avionics, weapons, airframe and engine. This program puts Australia at the forefront of high-tech helicopter training and creates the potential for significant exports as other countries including New Zealand, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Finland and Spain are buying these helicopters.
