ViSTIS

An international consortium comprising Hamburg-based ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems, Canberra-based Catalyst Interactive (a KBR company), and Frankfurt-based Crytek is undertaking the development of a new Virtual Ship Training & Information System (ViSTIS), designed to respond to rapidly changing training requirements within modern navies, both ashore and afloat.

The ViSTIS system aims to supersede the traditional training elements of part-task trainers, and as a retention and efficiency initiative, reduce the use of operational assets for training purposes. Officers and sailors will be able to rehearse all individual, team and teams-of-teams based tasks they will face during ordinary, extraordinary and battle situation on board the ship, both at-sea and in-harbour.

Speaking at a recent ASPI conference, the Chief of Navy, Vice Admiral Russ Crane, acknowledged that moving forward with its 'New Generation Navy' philosophy, the RAN would have to look at "innovative ways to reduce separation (from their families) ... we need to train people faster, and only to the level they really need - we need to learn to say 'no' to sending ships to sea if we can achieve better training outcomes alongside through the use of simulation and other tools."
